You Rise, You Shine

WINNER OF THE KATARA PRIZE FOR ARABIC NOVEL 2023 & BY TWO-TIME ARAB BOOKER LONGLISTED AUTHOR RASHA ADLY. Inspired by an ancient hymn to Ra and the haunting, luminous beauty of Fayum mummy portraits, You Rise, You Shine masterfully interweaves two parallel timelines across two millennia-from Roman-occupied Egypt in the first century AD to contemporary Rome and Cairo. When Raneem, an Egyptian art historian, joins an international research team uncovering ancient mummy portraits, she stumbles upon an enigmatic artifact in a Roman museum: a severed portrait of an alluring woman, methodically sliced into two halves. As Raneem embarks on an obsession-driven quest across archives and continents to piece together the missing half, she unravels a forgotten story of ancient rebellion, forbidden love, and resistance against colonial oppression. Fusing art mystery, historical investigation, and lyrical prose, Rasha Adly delivers a spellbinding masterpiece about memory, identity, and the immortal human spirit rising from the depths of history.
