An internationally acclaimed Saudi novelist, writer, and cultural leader. Holding a PhD in Marketing from the University of Ottawa, Alwan serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission under the Saudi Ministry of Culture. He achieved landmark international prominence after winning the prestigious International Prize for Arabic Fiction 2017 for his masterwork A Small Death (Mawt Sagheer), and was shortlisted in 2013 for The Beaver (Al-Qunfudh). In 2010, he was selected as one of the Beirut39—the thirty-nine most promising Arab writers under forty. Author of celebrated, widely read novels including The Ceiling of Sufficiency, The Ring of Purity, Sofia, and Jerma the Dragoman, Alwan is renowned for his lyrical prose, rigorous archival grounding, and deep philosophical excavations of human vulnerability, faith, and identity.
