Taleb Al-Refai

Taleb Al-Refai is a Kuwaiti novelist and short story writer whose narrative style is characterized by a unique blend of autofiction and social realism, frequently introducing himself as a character (an engineer or writer) within his novels. His writing is deeply concerned with class dynamics, the lives of marginalized foreign workers, and the hidden struggles of middle-class families in the Gulf. Al-Refai, who chaired the judging panel of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) in 2010, is celebrated for masterpieces such as Shadow of the Sun (Zill al-Shams), Scent of the Sea (Ra’ihat al-Bahr), and Al-Najdi (longlisted for the IPAF in 2017), establishing his reputation as a master chronicler of contemporary Gulf society.
