The Confectioner: The Fatimid Trilogy

WINNER OF THE SHEIKH ZAYED BOOK AWARD FOR LITERATURE 2024 & BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ AWARD WINNER DR. REEM BASSIOUNEY. Spanning two centuries of medieval Cairo’s most vibrant and volatile era, The Confectioner: The Fatimid Trilogy is a breathtaking historical masterwork celebrating the enduring soul of Egypt. Through three sweeping novellas, Reem Bassiouney interweaves the destinies of iconic historical rulers with ordinary citizens and the Halwani family line: Jawhar al-Siqilli, the Sicilian commander who founded Cairo and Al-Azhar Mosque; Badr al-Jamali, the visionary Armenian vizier who rescued Egypt from a devastating seven-year famine; and Saladin, the Kurdish general who reshaped the Middle East. Fusing rigorous archival research with rich romance, political intrigue, and spiritual depth, Bassiouney delivers a lush, unforgettable epic that redefines belonging, tolerance, and what it truly means to be Egyptian.
