Sulaiman Al-Maamari

An Omani writer, journalist, and cultural broadcaster born in 1974, Sulaiman Al-Maamari is a central figure in the Gulf’s literary scene, celebrated for his sharp, satirical narrative voice and his courageous campaigns against literary plagiarism. He won the prestigious Yusuf Idris Arabic Short Story Prize (2007) for his collection, Things are Closer Than They Seem in The Mirror. His notable novel, Who Does Not Like Jamal Abdelnasser (Alladhi La Yuhibbu Jamal Abdelnasser), won the Muscat Book Fair award for “Most Read Book” in 2014 before being controversially banned, which only increased its legendary status. Al-Maamari’s prose employs a dark, biting humor to expose intellectual opportunism and societal contradictions, making him one of Oman’s most vital contemporary voices.
