An acclaimed Syrian-Kurdish novelist and journalist, Maha Hassan is recognized as one of the most courageous voices in modern Arabic literature. Forced into exile in France in 2004 following state censorship of her work, she received the Human Rights Watch Hellman/Hammett Grant for persecuted writers in 2005. Hassan was twice longlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (The Arab Booker) for Umbilical Cord (2011) and The Narrators (2015), and shortlisted for the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature for Neighborhood of Wonder (2021).
