Khalil Al-Rez

An acclaimed Syrian novelist and literary translator. Having studied theater in Moscow and worked for decades as a broadcaster for Radio Moscow and a literary translator, Al-Rez is celebrated as one of the most inventive and idiosyncratic stylists in contemporary Arabic literature. He achieved widespread international acclaim when his novel The Russian Quarter (Al-Hayy Al-Rusi) was shortlisted for the prestigious International Prize for Arabic Fiction 2020. A master translator of classic Russian literature-including works by Anton Chekhov, Vladimir Nabokov, and Yevgeny Shvarts-he is the author of nine celebrated novels, such as Sulawesi, Equally, Irish Salmon, and A Strawberry Handkerchief. Renowned for his delicate psychological depth, subtle surrealism, and tragicomic excavations of exile, memory, and desire, Al-Rez crafts richly layered narrative worlds that exist on the fragile border between dream and reality.
