A Mauritanian poet, journalist, and novelist from the eastern Afalla region, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Ban brought the rich, unexplored terrain of the Mauritanian desert to the forefront of global Arabic literature. He won the prestigious Katara Prize for Arabic Novel (2020) for his epic work, The Valley of Firewood (Wadi Al-Hatab).
