You Rise, You Shine

Winner of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel (Best Novel), 2023. Ranim, an Egyptian art historian, becomes obsessed with a partially severed Fayum Mummy Portrait of a mysterious young woman from the 1st Century AD. Her quest to locate the missing half of the painting and unlock its subject’s identity bridges centuries. Alternating between Roman Egypt and the modern day, Rasha Adly utilizes her background in art history to bring ancient ruins and forgotten lives to breathing reality. This archaeological mystery is a beautiful study of historical memory, proving art can defy death to recover lost female voices.

Rasha Adly

An Egyptian novelist and art history researcher, Rasha Adly has carved a unique niche in the Arabic literary landscape by masterfully intertwining fine arts, historical epochs, and contemporary mystery. She reached the longlist of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) twice: first for Passion (Shaghaf) in 2018-whose English translation won the Banipal Prize in 2021 and was longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award-and again for The Last Days of the Pasha (Akher Ayam Al Basha) in 2020. Her novel You Rise, You Shine (Anta Tushriq Anta Tudee’) won the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel in 2023, solidifying her reputation as a sophisticated writer who interrogates the boundaries between historical archives and artistic imagination.
