The Aish Al-Saraya Incident and Its Amusing Chronicles
This political satire is narrated by a member of Sudan’s dissolved ruling party to an unknown driver after the October 2021 coup. The central “incident” revolves around a trivial dispute over who has the best recipe for the “Aish Al-Saraya” dessert. This conflict absurdly escalates to involve a “civic committee to investigate the Aish Al-Saraya dessert,” serving as a sharp allegory for the larger, more destructive power struggle between the two generals who plunged the country into war.
Hammour Ziada
Hammour Ziada is a Sudanese novelist who has published
three novels and two short story collections. His novel The
Longing of the Dervish (2014) won the Naguib Mahfouz Medal
for Literature and was shortlisted for the International Prize
for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) in 2015. The novel was translated
into English and Persian. He also wrote Sleeping at the Foot
of the Mountain, which was made into a film that won several
international prizes, including the Venice Festival Lion of the
Future award.
