A pioneering Palestinian journalist and novelist born in Ashkelon, Rabai Al-Madhoun made literary history as the first Palestinian to win the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (2016) for his sweeping novel Destinies: Concerto of the Holocaust and the Nakba (Masa’ir). His earlier masterpiece, The Lady from Tel Aviv (Al-Sayyida min Tel Aviv), which was also shortlisted for the IPAF (2010), marked a turning point in the “literature of return” by fearlessly examining the psychological and physical borders between Palestinians and Israelis, utilizing a highly controlled, polyphonic narrative structure that weaves exile, memory, and political realities.
